Minor Requirements

18 credit hours are required to complete a minor in African American Studies.

I. Prerequisites:

All students must successfully complete two of the following courses prior to formal admission to program (6 credits):

Course Course Title
AAS/ANT 112 Introduction to African American Studies in the Social Sciences (3 credits)
  And Either
AAS 231 African American Literature to 1900: An Introduction (3 credits)
  Or
AAS 232 African American Literature 20th & 21st Century: An Introduction (3 credits)


II. African American History:

Students must complete 3 credits in African American History, selected from the following classes.

AAS/HST 333 African American History after 1865


III. Electives (9 credits):

Students must choose three sub-field specialization courses from either of the two course tracks below. Please note: The following AAS course does not satisfy major requirements of the Department but does satisfy liberal arts requirements: AAS 138 Writing About Black Culture
